The Rundown #16

The delay in this week’s Rundown was due to my being on vacation earlier this week.  We still have some good news for you beer lovers, though:

First up, Leaky Roof Mead is officially available in cans in the SGF area.  I’ve seen it at Macadoodle’s on Independence and know it is hitting the Wine Center and many other accounts around town today.  The Cyser and the Berry Picker are available in 4-packs of 16oz cans, and they hope to be able to release the Bond Burner at the end of the month for those of you who like jalapenos and pineapple (If you think it sounds weird, you should at least try it.  It’s REALLY good.)

Springfield Brewing Company has big news for you.  The always amazing Bull Creek Brown is on tap now and has taken the place of the Heart of Darkness Dunkel.  In addition, watch for this year’s GABF Pro-Am entry, I Wanna Rauch, to appear on tap this Saturday.

This beer has an interesting pedigree.  This was the Best of Show winner in this year’s “To Helles and Bock” homebrew competition, hosted by The Zymurgists of the Ozarks Home Brewing Society (HomebrewZOO).  The brewer, Keith Wallis, was also the mastermind behind last year’s Best of Show Winner, 585 ESB, which was on tap for several weeks at this time last year.  Needless to say, he’s an excellent brewer, and you can expect a phenomenal beer.

SBC is also releasing a new drink menu which highlights several beer cocktails made with their ales and lagers.  Many of these cocktails have never been offered by SBC before, so it should be worth checking out.

Finally, Cathedral Square’s Ave Maria is in Springfield and should be available this week.  Bottles will be at the Wine Center and Macadoodles for sure, and maybe in a few other places this Friday.  The Mud Lounge will have it on tap at some point, but no word yet on when.  Ave Maria is a Double Abbey Ale aged in Elijah Craig barrels with morello cherries.  A very unique beer, and worth checking out.  Very limited quantities, I would imagine.

In news related to last week’s Rundown, I’ve seen the Santa Fe Oktoberfest out and about in their pretty little cans.  They are pretty cool looking cans, and the rumor has it they contain some very drinkable lager.  Crisp maltiness and bavarian hops make a helluva balance, and I love the Oktoberfest style.

The Rundown #15

Things are going to start warming up in craft beer here in the Ozarks for the next few months.  Oktoberfest and Pumpkin Beer season is fast approaching and all of the local breweries, shops, and distributors are gearing up for some great seasonal and special releases.

First up, Mother’s Brewing Company wants you to go Old School with their Oktoberfest.  It’s out on tap now and out in six-packs, as well.  They also brewed their GABF Pro-Am entry with Nathan Hopper, who won last year’s Art of Darkness Fall Competition hosted by The Zymurgists of the Ozarks.  They will have his “Riding Dirty” beer available at the brewery in the next few weeks, as it will need to be sent to the GABF folks in the next 20 days or so.

In addition, they are working on some pretty special projects, but they won’t tell me anything about them other than giggling like children while telling me nothing of significance.  I did glean from Tim Ryan that they will be launching a rebranded form of Fancy Pants next month.  They are also planning on expanding the bomber line, but won’t divulge any details as of yet.  With a little luck, I can get a bit more detail in the next week or two, so keep watching the Rundown.

Leaky Roof Meadery has successfully canned their mead, and you should see it in stores beginning this week, beginning with their Strawberry Mead.  It will roll out over time, but you can find them at Brown Derby, Hy-Vee, Price Cutter, and several other places.  They also hope to have their Bond Burner, which is a fan favorite, available at bars and in cans by the end of the month.  They say “No promises, but we’re getting close”.

Start watching out for your favorite Oktoberfest and Pumpkin beers as we roll into the middle of summer.  Each year, they get a bit earlier, but that’s because people like it that way.  I’m typically inclined to grumble about it like an old curmudgeonly beer snob, but I get excited for Oktoberfest beers.

‘Tweener: Rundown #14 Update

Just got a message from Eric at the Brown Derby Wine Center about some beers that won’t last long.  I thought you guys might want to know about these babies.

Sierra Nevada Equinox Harvest IPA– Equinox is the name of the single hop used in the latest Harvest Ale. Sierra describes it as having complex aromas ranging from bright and citrusy to herbal and woody, with a top note of fruity, garden-fresh bell pepper.

Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Invitation Ale – A West Coast Double IPA brewed to invite you to celebration the biggest craft beer collaboration extravaganza to ever take place in the history of the universe (that I’m aware of). These come in 24oz bombers and are in a very limited supply.  

They have limited seating still available to taste all 12 Sierra Nevada collaboration beers on August 12th at 6:30. The tickets will not last long and this will be the best way to ensure that you get to taste them, as the bottles are VERY limited.  To reserve your spot, call the Wine Center at 1(417) 883-4066 TODAY!!!

The Rundown #9

The latest in beer releases and local and regional beer news.  It’s the RUNDOWN!

Mother’s Brewing Company is releasing Super Doozy! very soon.  I mentioned it last week, but it’s sitting in warehouses now and you can expect to see it within the next two weeks.  A super-citra-hopped blast, this is a limited batch, and probably won’t last long.

In addition to their planned release of Super Doozy!, I also have an updated tap list for their tasting room:

Springfield Brewing Company says they don’t want to spoil the surprise, but watch for a new seasonal out very soon, as well.  I don’t have an update on it this week, unfortunately.

Brown Derby Wine Center:

Eric wanted me to remind you of their special guest for the Complimentary tasting on Friday.  Joe Stange, Co-Author of Around Brussels in 80 Beers and The Good Beer Guide to Belgium will be at the Wine Center pouring and discussing some hand-picked Belgian delights as part of his Good Beer Guide book tour.  Check out his blog at The Thirsty Pilgrim.

Eric gave me a list of fun things for you to check out while you’re there (or sooner, if you want some of the hard-to-get stuff):

  • Stone Brewing Company Collective Distortion IPA – Yet another bruiser Imperial IPA from Stone. The use of exotic hops and the addition of elderberries and coriander make it a unique twist on what we all love about Stone. 
  • Stone Brewing Company Stochasticity Quadro Triticale – A Belgian Style Quad brewed with a hybrid malt that comes across with the flavor of wheat and spiciness of rye. It’s lower in sweetness, but rich with flavors mirroring dried fruit, making Quadro Triticale a modern interpretation of one of the most historically sacred styles on Earth. 
  • Saison Dupont Cuvee Dry Hopping 2014- This is a personal favorite of mine. Every year Brasserie Dupont releases a small batch, dry-hopped version of their classic Saison. This year, the English variety, Challenger, was the hop of choice, lending floral and citrus notes to an already exciting & rustic brew.
  • Jolly Pumpkin/Anchorage Calabaza Boreal – Two kings of “funk” combine forces to make a saison with grapefruit peel, juice, & peppercorns. This is in very limited supply so get it while you can!
  • We received a very limited supply of Prairie Bomb!, as well as Bible Belt.
  • We also just tapped a keg of Bomb! and Jolly Pumpkin Bam Biere.
  • New from Cambridge Brewing is Flower Child IPA. A floral IPA that comes in 6pk cans.
  • Dieu du Ciel! Peche Mortel Imperial Coffee Stout – One of the top rated coffee stouts on Beer Advocate.
  • Hanson Brothers Beer Company Mmmmhops Pale Ale – This is not a joke. Hanson made a beer.
