What’s on Tap! 08/01/2014

Happy First Friday, Beer Buzzers.  We have a pretty solid list of things for you to do while you drink, but we’ll start with where you should be TONIGHT.

Get your butts down to Mother’s for the First Firkin Friday.  Tonight, they’ll have a Blueberry Mandarin Summer With with your name on it.  They start pouring the gravity-fed deliciousness at 6, but their tasting room opens in 15, so get busy getting there so you don’t miss a drop.

Tonight, you can catch an Springfield BRewing Company sampling at Arts & Letters as part of First Friday Art Walk.  They will be exhibiting art by Shay Rainey and pouring delicious local beer.  Win.  Starts at 7pm and runs until 10 pm at 214 S Campbell ave in downtown Springfield.

Tuesday, August 12th is the Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Tasting at the Brown Derby Wine Center.  The price is $20 per person and it will be a one-time opportunity to try several amazing beers you will not have another chance to try locally.  Show starts at 6:30 in the Wine Center Tasting Room.  RSVP at 417-883-4066 and tell them we sent you.  We get nothing out of it, but it will confuse them when you tell them.

The list of beers includes:

  • Asheville Brewer’s Alliance Tater Ridge Scottish Ale
  • Ballast Point Brewing Company Electric Ray India Pale Lager

The largest local homebrew club, The Zymurgists of the Ozarks (The Homebrew ZOO) has their monthly meeting on August 19th at 7:30 pm at The Homebrewery in Ozark, Missouri.  This month, we’ll be discussing Session Beers, which is a topic near and dear to my heart.  Come on out and meet some very avid beer-sharers.

This month is Boulevard’s month to make your mouth water.  They’re sponsoring 417 Magazine’s Restaurant Month, which promotes… well… restaurants in 417.  The kick-off party is Thursday, August 7th at Metropolitan Farmer, but they’re getting started August 3rd at participating restaurants.  For tickets to the kickoff party, call 417-720-1665, or click here for the menu and details.

Get out there and get drinking.  Tag your photos with #SGFBeer or send them to us at @sgfbeerbuzz (on Twitter and Instagram).  Let’s make this social media thing social.

‘Tweener: Rundown #14 Update

Just got a message from Eric at the Brown Derby Wine Center about some beers that won’t last long.  I thought you guys might want to know about these babies.

Sierra Nevada Equinox Harvest IPA– Equinox is the name of the single hop used in the latest Harvest Ale. Sierra describes it as having complex aromas ranging from bright and citrusy to herbal and woody, with a top note of fruity, garden-fresh bell pepper.

Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Invitation Ale – A West Coast Double IPA brewed to invite you to celebration the biggest craft beer collaboration extravaganza to ever take place in the history of the universe (that I’m aware of). These come in 24oz bombers and are in a very limited supply.

They have limited seating still available to taste all 12 Sierra Nevada collaboration beers on August 12th at 6:30. The tickets will not last long and this will be the best way to ensure that you get to taste them, as the bottles are VERY limited.  To reserve your spot, call the Wine Center at 1(417) 883-4066 TODAY!!!

What’s on Tap! 7/24/2014

Whew.  If you’re reading this, you survived Springfield Craft Beer Week last week.  There’s even a chance you didn’t get enough.  Well, if that’s the case, maybe you should consider making the trip up to St. Louis next week.  After all, it’s STL Beer Week.  They’ll have over 100 events spanning throughout the city and featuring all of the local breweries (an believe me, there are A LOT OF THEM).

Or, you may be looking for something a little closer to home.  If that’s the case, I encourage you to check these area events:

What’s on Tap! #SGFBeerWeek 2014 – 7/10/2014

Next week is SGF Craft Beer Week, culminating, of course, in the Craft Beer Bash on Saturday, July 19th.  Rather than take up tons of space listing off every event for craft beer week possible, I thought it might make more sense to make it a Google Map for you.

What’s on tap! 06/27/2014

First, off, let’s start with the most urgent event.  Joe Stange, Co-author of The Good Beer Guide to Belgium and Around Brussels in 80 Beers, will be at the Brown Derby Wine Center today from 4-7pm sharing some hand-selected Belgian Beer Samples.  It’ll be educational, delicious, and– best of all– free.

Once you’ve done that, you can head over to Mother’s Brewing Company for their Friday Flix event, co-sponsored by The Moxie Cinema.  Tonight’s feature is Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas.  Escape to Bat Country with Hunter S. Thompson on a mad journey through Vegas and drug-induced hazes.  Needless to say, you need to leave the kiddos at home.  This event is 21+ only.  Entry is $5 at the gate, and the show starts at 8:30 or so.

July 3rd, your Mother’s will be at Macadoodles in Branson for a beer tasting from 5-7.  If you have plans to be at the lake for the weekend of the 4th, this is a good way to get that started.  Check out Macadoodles online for more info.

On July 5th, join the folks at 2nd Shift Brewing Company in New Haven, Missouri for 2nd Shift’s Beerfest.  Runs from 1-5pm at the Cedar Creek Center, and will feature a large list of guest breweries sampling their wares.  Breweries include Mother’s, Schlafly, O’Fallon, Perennial, One Trick Pony, Six Row Brewing Company, Boulevard, Tallgrass, Rock Bridge, Morgan Street, Augusta, Square One, and many more.  If you’ve never been to New Haven, Missouri, this is a perfect reason to go.The address is Cedar Creek Center, 1401 Olive Road, New Haven, MO 63068.  For more information, call the brewery at 573-237-3421.  Designated drivers will be free.  Tickets are $30, but check out 2nd shift’s website for more info.

Don’t forget SGF Craft Beer week starts on July 13th.  It will be a week full of craft-beer related events all over town.  I’m working on compiling a list of events as quickly as possible.  It all culminates in the Craft Beer Bash downtown the following Saturday.  That event will feature all of the local breweries and a lot of craft beer flowing freely on Springfield’s Park Central Square.  Gird your loins.

In the meantime, whet your appetite with this list of SGF Beer Week events from Mother’s.

The Rundown #9

The latest in beer releases and local and regional beer news.  It’s the RUNDOWN!

Mother’s Brewing Company is releasing Super Doozy! very soon.  I mentioned it last week, but it’s sitting in warehouses now and you can expect to see it within the next two weeks.  A super-citra-hopped blast, this is a limited batch, and probably won’t last long.

In addition to their planned release of Super Doozy!, I also have an updated tap list for their tasting room:

  • Training Wheels (Session IPA)
  • Table Saison
  • High Plains Drifter (American Pale Ale)
  • Chocolate Thunder (Porter)
  • Grow Cukes, Not Nukes (Cucumber Saison)
  • Doozy (Double IPA)
  • Thing 2: Rye Saison
  • Holy Mole (Chili Beer)
  • Sexual Healing (Nitro Stout)
  • MO Cider

White River Brewing Company has Jam Up Blackberry Ale out and about.  Look for it on tap and in bottles around town.

Springfield Brewing Company says they don’t want to spoil the surprise, but watch for a new seasonal out very soon, as well.  I don’t have an update on it this week, unfortunately.

Brown Derby Wine Center:

Eric wanted me to remind you of their special guest for the Complimentary tasting on Friday.  Joe Stange, Co-Author of Around Brussels in 80 Beers and The Good Beer Guide to Belgium will be at the Wine Center pouring and discussing some hand-picked Belgian delights as part of his Good Beer Guide book tour.  Check out his blog at The Thirsty Pilgrim.

Eric gave me a list of fun things for you to check out while you’re there (or sooner, if you want some of the hard-to-get stuff):

  • Stone Brewing Company Collective Distortion IPA – Yet another bruiser Imperial IPA from Stone. The use of exotic hops and the addition of elderberries and coriander make it a unique twist on what we all love about Stone.
  • Stone Brewing Company Stochasticity Quadro Triticale – A Belgian Style Quad brewed with a hybrid malt that comes across with the flavor of wheat and spiciness of rye. It’s lower in sweetness, but rich with flavors mirroring dried fruit, making Quadro Triticale a modern interpretation of one of the most historically sacred styles on Earth.
  • Saison Dupont Cuvee Dry Hopping 2014- This is a personal favorite of mine. Every year Brasserie Dupont releases a small batch, dry-hopped version of their classic Saison. This year, the English variety, Challenger, was the hop of choice, lending floral and citrus notes to an already exciting & rustic brew.
  • Jolly Pumpkin/Anchorage Calabaza Boreal – Two kings of “funk” combine forces to make a saison with grapefruit peel, juice, & peppercorns. This is in very limited supply so get it while you can!
  • We received a very limited supply of Prairie Bomb!, as well as Bible Belt.
  • We also just tapped a keg of Bomb! and Jolly Pumpkin Bam Biere.
  • New from Cambridge Brewing is Flower Child IPA. A floral IPA that comes in 6pk cans.
  • Dieu du Ciel! Peche Mortel Imperial Coffee Stout – One of the top rated coffee stouts on Beer Advocate.
  • Hanson Brothers Beer Company Mmmmhops Pale Ale – This is not a joke. Hanson made a beer.

What’s on Tap! 6/19/2014

There are quite a few fun events coming in in Southwest Missouri in the next few weeks.  From bond-burning parties to a night at the movies, your local craft beer scene is looking like a lot of fun.
