The Rundown #9

The latest in beer releases and local and regional beer news.  It’s the RUNDOWN!

Mother’s Brewing Company is releasing Super Doozy! very soon.  I mentioned it last week, but it’s sitting in warehouses now and you can expect to see it within the next two weeks.  A super-citra-hopped blast, this is a limited batch, and probably won’t last long.

In addition to their planned release of Super Doozy!, I also have an updated tap list for their tasting room:

White River Brewing Company has Jam Up Blackberry Ale out and about.  Look for it on tap and in bottles around town.

Springfield Brewing Company says they don’t want to spoil the surprise, but watch for a new seasonal out very soon, as well.  I don’t have an update on it this week, unfortunately.

Brown Derby Wine Center:

Eric wanted me to remind you of their special guest for the Complimentary tasting on Friday.  Joe Stange, Co-Author of Around Brussels in 80 Beers and The Good Beer Guide to Belgium will be at the Wine Center pouring and discussing some hand-picked Belgian delights as part of his Good Beer Guide book tour.  Check out his blog at The Thirsty Pilgrim.

Eric gave me a list of fun things for you to check out while you’re there (or sooner, if you want some of the hard-to-get stuff):

  • Stone Brewing Company Collective Distortion IPA – Yet another bruiser Imperial IPA from Stone. The use of exotic hops and the addition of elderberries and coriander make it a unique twist on what we all love about Stone. 
  • Stone Brewing Company Stochasticity Quadro Triticale – A Belgian Style Quad brewed with a hybrid malt that comes across with the flavor of wheat and spiciness of rye. It’s lower in sweetness, but rich with flavors mirroring dried fruit, making Quadro Triticale a modern interpretation of one of the most historically sacred styles on Earth. 
  • Saison Dupont Cuvee Dry Hopping 2014- This is a personal favorite of mine. Every year Brasserie Dupont releases a small batch, dry-hopped version of their classic Saison. This year, the English variety, Challenger, was the hop of choice, lending floral and citrus notes to an already exciting & rustic brew.
  • Jolly Pumpkin/Anchorage Calabaza Boreal – Two kings of “funk” combine forces to make a saison with grapefruit peel, juice, & peppercorns. This is in very limited supply so get it while you can!
  • We received a very limited supply of Prairie Bomb!, as well as Bible Belt.
  • We also just tapped a keg of Bomb! and Jolly Pumpkin Bam Biere.
  • New from Cambridge Brewing is Flower Child IPA. A floral IPA that comes in 6pk cans.
  • Dieu du Ciel! Peche Mortel Imperial Coffee Stout – One of the top rated coffee stouts on Beer Advocate.
  • Hanson Brothers Beer Company Mmmmhops Pale Ale – This is not a joke. Hanson made a beer.

Welcome to The Rundown. Each week, we’ll post new beer releases, special editions, and seasonals that you can find here in Springfield. If a beer has not yet been released, we’ll also let you know the release date when we can.

Boulevard Brewing Company

Boulevard’s Love Child No. 4 will be out this week.  The Love Child series is Boulevard’s venture into barrel-aged beers using Brettanomyces and Lactobaccillus cultures.  Funky, sour, fruity, and fun, the Love Child No. 3 included beer aged from 16 months to nearly six years.  Another portion spent 11 months in steel tanks, souring on the lacto.

Also, stay tuned for information about the upcoming release of their Radler.  I understand there will be at least one launch event in the Springfield area for it.

Leaky Roof Meadery

Our friends down at Leaky Roof may only have two of their meads at local taps, but if you’re willing to jog on over to Buffalo, Missouri, you can taste each of these fine beverages:

  • Dog house: Sour Cherry Cyser 6.5% abv
  • Spooklight: Pumpkin Pie Metheglin 6.5% abv
  • Gandy Dancer: Mead 6.5% abv
  • Berry Picker: Mixed Berry Melomel 6.5% abv
  • High Dry and Dusty: Dry Ginger Metheglin 6.5% abv
  • KCC&S: Cyser 6.5% abv
  • B&C: Buckwheat varietal honey with Sour Cherries 9% abv
  • The Intruder: Traditional Cyser 12% abv
  • Blueberry Cyser 6.5% abv

Brown Derby International Wine Center

New on tap: Evil Twin Imperial Doughnut Break – This is an imperial stout brewed with chocolate, coffee, and almonds, and is then “dry-doughnuted”. That’s right, they throw glazed doughnuts into the beer during fermentation. What does this do exactly? I’m not quite sure, but it tastes excellent. We are very fortunate to receive one of only a few kegs that came to the state.

Stone Enjoy By 7-4-14 IPA – Brewed not to last! This devastatingly dank double IPA is meant to be consumed with 35 days of the bottled on date. In bottles and going on tap today!

Can it! Cans are the hottest trend going in craft beer at the moment and we’ve got a lot of new brews in said format:

  • Kirkwood Station Blackberry Wheat & IPA – New to the area from Kirkwood Missouri; These tasty and refreshing brews come in 4pk cans making them perfect for summer fun. (Not to be used as a floatation device)
  • Rock Bridge Saison & Rye You Lil’ Punk IPA – Saison in a can? Saison in a can. These guys are representing Columbia, MO and with a Saison and a Rye IPA, they are taking on styles that have yet to be seen during a Missouri float trip.
  • Bell’s Two Hearted Ale in cans! Need I say more? No, but I will. These babies are fresh as can be and they are in short supply. Stock up now or there will be a hollow abyss in one (or both) of your hearts this summer.

Mother’s Brewing Company

Our friends over at Mother’s may not have anything brand new in their tasting room this week, but there is plenty to sample down there, especially if you haven’t been down in a while.  Check out last week’s Rundown for the full list.

The Rundown #5

Welcome to The Rundown.  Each week, we’ll post new beer releases, special editions, and seasonals that you can find here in Springfield.  If a beer has not yet been released, we’ll also let you know the release date when we can.

White River Brewing Company:
Buck Hollow Blond is rolling out throughout SGF and Southwest Missouri right now. It’s a Belgian blonde ale with a Missouri twist.

Look for the release of Jam Up Blackberry Ale in the next month or so.  Also, if you’re looking to do a vertical tasting, I know the Barrels store on South National still has a bottle or two on their shelf, as of this past weekend.  They are moving the Jam Up release date up from Autumn to Summer this year.

Springfield Brewing Company:
It’s your last chance to try Quencher in the Rye.  It went fast, but they’ll be changing out that tap this week.  They’ve also switched up their tap list significantly in the past week or so.  In addition to their four mainstays (11-Point Pilsner, Paul’s Pale Ale, Walnut Street Wheat, and Hop Lobster), they also have the following:

Bombay Brown – I love this beer.  It’s a slightly different take on the modern IPA.  It’s a darker color and the malts used stay away from the sweeter caramel flavors in order to focus on the more bready, toast-like aromas and flavors offered by brown malt.  The brewery says it’s a bit like having citrus marmalade on melba toast.  It’s a fair descriptor.

Bearded Guard – Bière de Garde is a style of beer traditionally brewed in Northern France, and is the cousin of the Belgian Saison.  This farmhouse ale uses a yeast strain known for producing very nice peppery notes (think black pepper, not bell peppers), while also including some subtle clove-like aroma.  The flavor is more bread-like, finishing with a slight fruitiness.

No word on what will take the spot of the Quencher in the Rye when it goes off later this week.  What SBC beer do you hope takes its spot?  Comment below with your favorite SBC beer.

Mother’s Brewing Company:
Doozy is out in four packs, and Sandy is out in six packs.  If you haven’t had Sandy or don’t remember it, it’s a very nice hopped-up wheat beer with some serious grapefruit notes.

Here’s a list of what’s pouring in their tasting room right now (with some notes from Tim Ryan of Mother’s):

You can also find their usual delicious fare, including Towhead, Li’l Helper, Three Blind Mice, Sandy, and Doozy in the tasting room, as well.

In the near future, you can expect to see Super Doozy come out in 22oz bombers in mid-June and D’Lila, the super hopped-up wheat, will come out in July.

Brown Derby Wine Center:
Our friends down at the Wine Center have some great stuff coming out this week, as well.  Here are a few highlights provided by Eric Carter:

  • Boulevard Entwined Ale – It’s the first installment of what’s called their “Backroad Series”.  Based on the concept of blending the arts of brewing and winemaking.
  • Rogue Voodoo Doughnut – Pretzel, Raspberry & Chocolate Ale housed in a wonderfully pink bottle.
  • Odell Tree Shaker Peach Imperial IPA – Peachy IPA? Yum.
  • Odell Footprint Ale
  • Free State Stormchaser Summer IPA
  • Stone Saison – Summer release.  Very delicious Farmhouse ale.

Other Quick Hits:
Santa Fe Freestyle Pilsner will be out next week.

Happy Hour Live tonight will feature a Cathedral Square tasting at the University Plaza Hotel Lobby.  I would include this in the What’s on Tap! segment tomorrow, but by then it will be TOO LATE!

The Rundown #1

Welcome to The Rundown.  Each week, we’ll post new beer releases, special editions, and seasonals that you can find here in Springfield.  If a beer has not yet been released, we’ll also let you know the release date. Mother’s Brewing Company Tasting Room: Chocolate Thunder – Stout brewed with Askinosie Chocolate. Pulp Fiction – Saison with Blood Oranges Imperial Three Blind Mice – Big brother to three blind mice, this one’s big, bold, and delicious. Grow Cukes not Nukes – Cucumber Saison, cool and refreshing with a hint of black pepper from the yeast.  Should be out next week. Love Factory #2 – Not out yet, but you should be thinking about it.  Launches on May 17th at the 4th Ever Mother’s Day Festival. Springfield Brewing Company: Hellbender Hellerbock – Pale golden bock beer with a healthy helping of fruity hops. Del Fuego! – An SBC favorite, this stout is dosed with smoked Chipotle Meco, Pasilla, Ancho  and De Arbol peppers.  Don’t fear the heat, though.  It’s well balanced and not too spicy. Quencher in the Rye(PA) – A newer addition to the SBC family, this RyePA is crisp and bright with some peppery notes from the hops and rye. White River Brewing Company: Ole Mill Ale – You can still find this in a few stores around town.  It’s big, bold and delicious.  A big malt backbone and some warming alcohols make this an ideal companion for sipping next to a fire on a chilly spring evening. Buck Hollow Blond – A Missouri take on a Belgian blonde, this should be hitting stores next week.  Once I have a firm date, I’ll let you know. Leaky Roof Meadery: Berry Picker – Four berries in a mead?  Yes, please.  The sweetness of the mead is well balanced by the tart addition of four berries.  A very refreshing change of pace for when you want something completely different. (Available on tap only) Around and about town: Boulevard Grainstorm: A “double black rye IPA”, expect big malt, big hops, and the darkness of a storm at night.  Big beer. Tallgrass Brewing: Halcyon and new variety packs hit stores this week.  Halcyon is a refreshing wheat beer made from Kansas wheat and a healthy handful of hops.  Nice citrusy beer, and it comes in cans for your outdoor adventures. Deschutes: Fresh Squeezed will be back in town this week.  It’s an IPA made with citra and mosaic hops, lending bright citrus and tropical fruit in large doses without the addition of actual fruit. Not The Stoic is a Belgian dark strong ale (Read: a quadrupel) from a Deschutes.  It releases in town next week, so keep a sharp eye out for it.  I’m not sure how much will be around. Abita Andygator Doppelbock – This beer looks pretty intense.  It’s a high-gravity beer fermented to a dry finish using German yeast and Liberty hops.  It’s a clear straw color with a bit of sweetness, bread, and spice, but it finishes dry.  It’s back in stores in SGF and now available in 6 packs. Anchor Brewing Company – The California Lager (Part of their Zymaster Series) is out.  It’s a single-hop beer that uses cluster hops “from a long line originally grown in California.  They are actually doing a lot of local sourcing, using water from Yosemite, their own California yeast strain, and the Cluster hops. Anchor IPA is also out and about town.  It’s a well-balanced IPA with a solid malt backbone and an intense hop bitterness. Other Quick Hits:

  • Cathedral Square Belgian White is now available in 6 pack bottles
  • Firestone Walker Velvet Merlin Oatmeal Stout (seasonal)
  • Stone Sprocket Bier (Black Rye Kolsch)
  • Sierra Nevada Hoptimum (limited time)
  • Founders All-Day IPA (a personal favorite) is coming in 15 pack cans for the same price as 12.
  • Odell Loose Leaf Session Ale (session IPA)
